Aartech’s offerings to the Telecom Sector

– Telecom Sector

Thanks for your interest in Aartech’s offerings to the telecom sector. Whether you are a telecom professional, equipment manufacturer, consultant, EPC contractor, project planner, system integrator or research / design / operation / maintenance / testing / commissioning engineer, we hope that you find our solutions of interest and look forward to hear from you.

The telecom sector provides for the communication links that keep people in touch and modern information systems running. In many ways, the way telecom services have reached out to a large population of remote users and locations is unprecedented in the recent technology times. This brings with it accompanied challenges in the energy domain, some solutions of which are listed below.

Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)

Sensitive Electrical Loads require superior power quality. Conventional UPS are characterized by high Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) when factors such as efficiency loss, battery replacements and indoor installations are taken into account. Also the increasing element of criticality and interdependence demand full facility protection rather than limited protection of sensitive loads.

An offline UPS that can meet the desired power quality benchmarks and provide for enough backup to support the operations till backup DG sets come into service can have a direct impact on all the above factors and offer a much more attractive TCO. Further, an offline UPS can actually be integrated at the Medium Voltage (MV) level and provide for full facility protection of critical installations.

Telecom infrastructure now involves large number of distributed data centres. In the Data Center environment, the ever-increasing demand for high-speed global Internet services, along with the increasing density of servers and other components have resulted in a re-examination of basic data center design. Now—more than ever—controlling energy consumption and improving efficiency have become key financial and environmental objectives for the data center. The air conditioners and chillers required to maintain optimum temperature within the data center are, themselves, now considered critical loads. And some process equipment and business services outside the data center may be designated critical loads as well. The traditional approach to data center power protection—distributed low-voltage, low-power UPSs—can still be used for these additional critical loads. But this approach is expensive, not only in initial equipment and electrical infrastructure costs but in lower efficiencies, added floor space requirements, and increased maintenance costs.

Conventional UPSs are not the best overall power protection solution for larger data centres. Furthermore, adding UPS protection to critical air-conditioning systems isn’t possible with most double-conversion UPS designs. The inrush current of large pump motors and chillers presents too great a load for these UPSs.

Aartech is associated as a value added system reseller with M/s S&C USA for their PureWave UPS , a proven power quality product with a large and successful installation base worldwide.

S&C’s PureWave UPS System protects power-sensitive equipment from the detrimental effects of disturbances such as voltage sags, surges, transients, momentary disruptions, and complete outages. This unique Smart Grid solution supports the entire load with clean power for up to 60 seconds, eliminating 99% of all power quality problems. It supports reduced loads for up to 180 seconds. A high-efficiency static switch provides immediate — 2- to 4-millisecond — response. Also on offer is an extended run-time version of the UPS, the PureWave UPS-XT.  This product provides S&C’s field-proven UPS technology applied to projects that require battery run-times in excess of one minute.

The large-scale, medium-voltage PureWave UPS System is ideal for meeting Tier III and Tier IV electrical requirements as well as Class A and Class B cooling requirements. PureWave UPS Systems also meet the guidelines of Level III – the next generation standards of The Green Grid’s Data Center Maturity Model. The Series Redundancy approach used in PureWave UPS installations is recommended by The Uptime Institute

Reliable Engine Starting

Backup DG Sets are the last line of defense against a total AC failure. However, it is observed that they may not operate on demand due to problems in the batteries, maintenance issues etc. For telecom towers, this means a severe case of customer service issues, loss of revenue and goodwill.

Aartech’s KranKing Utlracapacitors can provide reliable engine starting solutions to ensure robust electrical support to the batteries at the time of engine cranking. A portable jump start system can also effectively provide for an arrangement to support the operations of multiple DG sets.

Load Limting

The control arrangements in the industry are naturally elaborate and extensive. Usually, circuit faults in the control wiring are handled by use of HRC fuses or MCBs. Both require manual intervention for restoration.

Aartech’s load limiter system solutions in the form of Load Checker can act as an automatic resettable control fuse and thus provide for minimum downtime and repair/replacement costs and efforts.

Energy Harvesting

Micro energy sources can be tapped for productive use by using energy harvesting technologies in a site independent manner, and sometimes even during transit. For eg. Solar PowerWind PowerHydro Power micro sources can be harvested using Photo Voltaic (PV) / micro wind turbines, micro hydro turbines, stored and used on demand to power portable hand held devices such as cell phones, radios, computers , tools, instruments etc.or entire telecom towers as well.

One can conceive numerous needs in Telecom applications  which optimally utilize the energy harvesting technologies. For eg. a consumer can power his communication devices while on the move with a small PV module on his/her backpack. A facility to charge a cell phone when a utility outlet is not accessible is one of the most pressing needs at times.

FaraDigm™ Ultracapacitors have a wide range of ratings to suit energy harvesting requirements. Some offerings also provide for a flexible form factor, making it adaptable to the end use application very effectively.
