Aartech’s offerings to the Defence Sector

– Defence Industry

Thanks for your interest in Aartech’s offerings to the defence sector. Whether you are a defence manufacturer, consultant, EPC contractor, project planner, system integrator or research / design / operation / maintenance / testing / commissioning engineer, we hope that you find our solutions of interest and look forward to hear from you.

The defence sector is one of the most technically demanding industries with the highest emphasis on performance and reliability. Aartech’s offerings are designed to meet and surpass global benchmarks as per the application requirements

W

Reliable Engine Starting

While most defence vehicles are sized considering high performance benchmarks and operating margins, the batteries are sized in accordance with their power requirements, and not for the energy requirements. Further, old batteries, batteries discharged due to running house loads deliberately or accidently, or cold weather conditions can result in unsuccessful engine starting attempts that can result in minor inconveniences like jump starts or push starts (not feasible for larger vehicles) to major delays, holdups and consequential damages for strategic operations.

The defence industry demands reliable operations in the most demanding conditions. Aartech’s KranKing™ Ultracapacitorshave proven performance in meeting such requirements after having completed successful trials with defense establishments and certifications in defense laboratories.

Commercial Heavy Vehicles used in defence rely on reliable operations to meet the schedule and commitments of their offered services, which is directly related to their revenues and logistics. It is not uncommon to find fleet capacity over-sizing, battery charging stations, spares and service vehicles provided to deal with an odd vehicle down due to starting issues. Battery banks / carts may not be recharged at all times, or may not be available for repeated starts of multiple vehicles, say on a cold morning. The logistics of replacement of batteries or in-situ charging are also not trivial in many cases.

KranKing™ Ultracapacitors can be employed in onboard installations for vehicles, service station carts for fleet operations, service vehicle mounted form for a work site, to largely address such issues.

KranKing™ Ultracapacitors can not only enhance engine starting performance and reliability by enhancing robust electrical support to the batteries, but reduce the extent of voltage dips thus substantially improving the performance of the mounted peripherals, reduce the wear and tear on the components.

Load Limiting

Several defense requirements need to equip their personnel with easy access to charging their electronic peripherals but simultaneously need to restrict the user from powering higher loads. A rugged, low cost device installed with each access point can suitably address this need.

Also, the control arrangements in such schemes are naturally elaborate and extensive. Usually, circuit faults in the control wiring are handled by use of HRC fuses or MCBs. Both require manual intervention for restoration.

Aartech’s load limiter system solutions in the form of Load Checker can act as an automatic resettable control fuse and thus provide for minimum downtime and repair/replacement costs and efforts.

Aartech offers industry rugged LoadChecker solutions to these issues with low rating (< 100W) load limiters at a very affordable cost which are field proven with 1000’s in service.

Puls Power

Several defence vehicle applications need to ensure that sensitive onboard electronics of vehicles are not affected by temporary dips in the battery supply due to occasional duty of high power loads.

Also, braking energy typically lost in heat by way of braking resistors can be stored for reuse with the concept of regenerative braking. This technology is of use in micro hybrid, mini hybrid or fully hybrid vehicles by providing onboard systems for effective capture, conversion and deployment of braking energy. FaraDigm® Ultracapacitors provide a effective battery replacement / backup arrangement technically optimized for such pulse power requirements with smaller weight, volume and footprint – important considerations for such applications.

FaraDigm® Ultracapacitors have proven performances for such applications with numerous advantages over battery based systems.

W

Energy Harvesting

One can conceive numerous needs in Defence applications which optimally utilize the energy harvesting technologies. For eg. a foot solider can power his communication devices while on the move with a small PV module on his/her backpack. Or a remote sensing data buoy on a weather monitoring station in the mountains or out in the ocean, gathers energy and powers its measurement equipments and communication devices. A facility to charge a cell phone when a utility outlet is not accessible is one of the most pressing needs at times.

FaraDigm™ Ultracapacitors have a wide range of ratings to suit energy harvesting requirements. Some offerings also provide for a flexible form factor, making it adaptable to the end use application very effectively.
