– BTS Applications
Aartech is established and recognized in the field of bus transfer internationally, with several internationally published papers, approvals from major switchgear manufacturers, consultants, turnkey EPC contractors and utilities as established with performance certificates from our esteemed end users. With an experience of over 100’s of installations and decades of service, Aartech’s BTS 2000 Fast Bus Transfer Systems provides proven advanced numerical microprocessor based fast bus transfer solutions of ensuring safe and reliable bus transfer operations with the best international benchmarks.
A brief on the industry applications are described below:
Various configurations have been provided in thermal power plants, such as – unit-to-station, station-to-station, unit-to-unit, station-to-unit, unit-to-station + station-to-unit, unit-to-station+ ½ station-to-station etc depending on the design, operational philosophy, economy and wish-list of the end user. While traditionally, these schemes have been applied to unit boards, they are increasingly being considered for station boards, coal handling plant switchboards, cooling water handling switchboards and LT switchboards as well to establish a more robust and redundant operation in plants ranging from 25MW to 660 MW.
Typically, a unit-to-station + station-to-unit three breaker configuration is employed to take advantage of the ability of the Unit Transformer (UT) and Startup Transformer (ST) to handle entire load of each other and are customized depending on the design, operational philosophy, economy and wish-list of the end user.
Aartech’s BTS 2000 is in successful operation at several nuclear power plants for many years now.
In a typical oil and gas installation, there are many operations of periodic as well as continuous nature with varying process time constants during which it may be a critical requirement for some of the electrical loads, such as pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc. to be supported with electrical power. Many plants have their own captive power for inhouse consumption, reliable power availability to critical processes, improved power quality as well as power export which may operate in grid connected or islanded configuration. Thus it is important to maintain the process continuity of all the critical auxiliaries in the plant in the event of a contingency. The bus transfer systems are employed in various configurations depending on the design, operational philosophy, economy and wish-list of the end user although a three breaker main-tie-main configuration is the most typical.
In a typical captive power plant, there may be different scheduled allocations for the generated power, such as in-house load, export power etc. These support many operations of periodic as well as continuous nature with varying process time constants during which it may be a critical requirement for some of the electrical loads, other than the typical critical auxiliaries of the captive power plant, such as pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc. to be supported with electrical power. These systems are employed in various configurations depending on the design, operational philosophy, economy and wish-list of the end user although a unit-to-station or a three breaker main-tie-main configuration are the most typical.
Aartech’s BTS 2000 is in operation at several captive power plants of various ratings for many years now.
Process continuity for hydro generation auxiliaries are generally not considered very critical as the unit can be brought back into circuit without much loss of revenue or time. However, there could be other mechanical and hydraulic considerations that may make it important for pumps and motors to run without interruption. Sometimes, there is a need to provide startup support with DG sets and then transfer the auxiliaries to the generator after synchronization. These systems depend entirely on the design, operational philosophy, economy and wish-list of the end user.
There are various heavy engineering industries where there are many operations of periodic as well as continuous nature with varying process time constants during which it may be a critical requirement for some of the electrical loads to be supported with electrical power. Many plants have their own captive power for inhouse consumption, reliable power availability to critical processes, improved power quality as well as power export which may operate in grid connected or islanded configuration. Wherever independent alternate source arrangements are aware, it is worthwhile to explore the prospects of a bus transfer solution.
– Some typical heavy industry applications are as follows:-
Metal: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, smelters, furnaces etc.
Petrochemical: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
- Note: Traditionally, fast bus transfer practices were not considered safe and feasible in the petrochemical sector. However, Aartech has pioneering work, extensive trials and studies which has motivated end users to modify their practices, revise their specifications. Aartech has thus secured the approvals of their BTS 2000 Fast Bus Transfer System product and supplied, installed and successfully commissioned such equipments to world-class petrochemical plants.
Aartech’s paper on Fast Bus Transfer Systems for Critical Process Continuity was presented at IEEE’s Industry Applications Society’s PCI – Petroleum and Chemical Industry Conference at New Delhi, India in 2004 and well received by industry peers.
Mining: Process Continuity of critical mills, pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
- Aartech’s BTS 2000 installation at a 11kV substation supporting a mining operation of one of the world’s largest open cast copper and gold mine, PT Newmont, Indonesia is in successful operation since 2006.
Chemical: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, electrolysers, batch separators etc.
Textile: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
Cement: Process Continuity of critical mills, pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
Paper: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
- Aartech’s paper on Bus Transfer Systems – Requirements, Implementation and Experiences was presented at IEEE’s Industry Applications Society’s PPIC – Paper and Pulp Industry Conference at Toronto, Canada in 2002 and well received by industry peers.
Sugar: Process Continuity of critical pumps, motors, compressors, drives etc.
- Aartech’s BTS 2000 is in operation at an Integrated Sugar Plant having a captive power plant of 25MW since 2006.
Water handling projects have mechanical and hydraulic considerations that may make it important for pumps and motors to run without interruption. Sometimes, there is a need to provide startup support with DG sets and then transfer the auxiliaries to the generator after synchronization.
