Project Brief :

 

This project proposes a smart grid initiative by way of energy recuperation and reuse using ultracapacitor based energy storage systems in elevators. This can save the energy otherwise dissipated in resistor banks while also providing for emergency rescue operations in the event of power failure. With DC link interfacing, the system integration is expected to be simplified with improvement in power quality benchmarks compared to current technology options.

 

Project Outline :

 

With the proliferation of multi-storied buildings in all major cities, and the expected

infrastructure drive through the smart cities program in India, penetration and use of elevators are expected to grow significantly, and expected to constitute a significant share of overall building energy consumption. This project proposes energy efficient and reliable elevator system with a significantly enhanced user experience, by way of energy recuperation and reuse using ultracapacitor based energy storage systems in elevators. This can save the energy otherwise dissipated in resistor banks while also providing for emergency rescue operations in the event of power failure in a seamless manner thus reducing the anxieties of the occupants of the elevator car in the event of a power outage. With DC link interfacing, the system integration is expected to be simplified with improvement in power quality benchmarks compared to current technology options.

The proposed elevator system stores the regenerated energy in an ultracapacitor bank and

reuses it at the time of demand.

 

Ultracapacitor has reasonably good energy density and very high power density making it

the best choice as a storage device for our application. Compared with batteries ultracapacitor requires much lesser maintenance and it has a longer life. Ultracapacitors can survive a large number of charging and discharging cycles which makes it a perfect choice as a storage device in elevator applications, since elevator ascends and descends very frequently.

 

When the power fails elevators tend to get stuck inducing panic among the people onboard. In the industrial setup it affects the production due to the delay in delivery of goods. Therefore, power outage ride-through capability is essential for an elevator system. At present Diesel based Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) generators are used to backup power supply. However, diesel ICE generators are not environmental friendly. They are noisy, need high maintenance and have a poor dynamic response.

 

Alternately, there is an increasing trend to use Automatic Rescue Devices (ARD) which are also being considered as a mandatory requirement by several regulatory agencies. The ARD is essentially a battery powered inverter which provides emergency power to the elevator and inches the passenger car to the next floor in the direction where least effort is required. While it is ensured that the passenger is brought to the next convenient floor, it still induces anxieties in the passengers during this operation.

 

In the proposed design, Ultracapacitors will provide for seamless rescue operations and bring the elevator to the next floor in the event of power failure. The system proposed in this work is environmental friendly and energy efficient. Elevators are one of the major power consuming parts of a building. The proposed work will help in reducing the energy consumed by elevators and thus reducing the electricity cost. This elevator system will be maintenance free thus relieving the consumers from frequent repairs.
